Traditionally this is done in 'seiza' (kneeling position), with the hands openand resting on top of the thighs.

The highest rank acknowledges the founder of the style .

The next highest rank acknowledges the teacher/instructor, with theirrank/teaching title.

 

The next highest rank acknowledges the dojo, the students, instructors and all that is encompassed as 'Zennin.'

Students bow from seiza at the command of "noto lei", the left hand goes out in front of them on the floor, followed by your right hand with  thumbs outstretched and each touching the other this forms a diamond shape between the thumbs and the outstretched fingers, bowing as low as possible while still looking forward to protect the highest rank from attack from behind, From the command of "noto"  the students right hand returns to the thigh first then the left hand .
